Acai Bowl with Sambazon Smoothie. Best Breakfast Ever?
With extraordinary superfood qualities, Acai Berries are rich in heart-healthy fats, fibers, trace minerals and essential amino acids. They also contain a staggering ten times the number of antioxidants found in red grapes.
The small, purple berry of the acai palm, (euterpe oleracea,) has been used for centuries in its native South American homeland to create all kinds of jellies, syrups, beverages, and as a traditional medicine to bring relief to a wide range of ailments and illness.
Today, the super tasty acai bowl belongs to one of the most delicious and nutritious breakfast dishes served anywhere in the world, and with the convenient smoothie packs from Sambazon, are an absolute breeze to prepare. And the fantastic taste is backed by the terrific health benefits, such as:
Anti oxidantThe human body is continuously reacting to attacks from potentially harmful chemicals in our environment. One reaction is that we produce chemicals, known as 'free radicals,' as by-products of our digestion process, by overexposure to sunlight, and as a reaction to the toxins contained in cigarette smoke.
The result is that over time, these chemical triggers cause damage to our DNA, which leads to an increase in our risk of heart disease and cancer.
Acai berries are packed full of antioxidants such as procyanidins and flavonoids which are highly effective at neutralizing free radicals. In fact, research published in 2006 in the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Journal, reports that acai compounds are among the most potent natural antioxidants known to science today.
Acai berries are also known to contain natural compounds that help suppress inflammation, the painful process that occurs in conditions such as arthritis. Researchers at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center reported that acai berry extracts work to contain the production of the inflammatory compounds interleukins and cyclooxygenases.
And in a further study published in 'Phytomedicine' in 2012 laboratory animals fed with acai extract showed less lung inflammation when exposed to cigarette smoke than animals who were fed a diet without acai extract. Results from trials with human participants are still pending publication.
Lowering our risk of cancer by neutralizing harmful free radicals is not the only way acai compounds can help us prevent cancer, research suggests. Through a process called apoptosis, acai extract may even induce cancer cells to die. The findings published in 2006 showed that cancer cells exposed to acai compounds ceased to divide, and gradually expired. All these studies would indeed suggest that acai berries may directly combat cancer cells, but more research involving human subjects is still needed before this can be 100% confirmed.
Minimum side effects
Acai berry products are available as juices, extracts, powders, capsules, tablets, and as convenient smoothie packs such as The Original Acai Berry + Guarana, 14 Oz, and the Unsweetened Pure Acai Berry, 14.11 Oz from Sambazon. No recommended dosage has as yet been established, with 1000 milligram once or twice per day considered safe and side-effect-free. However, in cases of pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergy, and during chemotherapy, the potent antioxidant effects of acai berries is insufficiently documented to claim a 100% risk-free use. Always talk to a medical professional if you're in any doubt about adding acai berries to your diet on a regular basis.
While some acai products claim even lower calorie counts, rule of thumb states that 100-gram of pure acai puree contains around 100 calories, depending on how they are prepared and whether they have been deseeded or not.
